Beckwith Appointed to Advisory Board for Presidential Religious Liberty Commission

Dr. Francis Joseph Beckwith, professor of philosophy & church-state studies in the Department of Philosophy, was appointed by the White House on May 16, 2025 to the Advisory Board of Legal Experts for the Presidential Religious Liberty Commission, which is housed in the U.S. Department of Justice.

Writing extensively in the areas of religious liberty, legal philosophy, ethics, and religion and culture, his 2015 book, Taking Rites Seriously: Law, Politics, and the Reasonableness of Faith (Cambridge University Press) was one of five winners of the prestigious American Academy of Religion’s 2016 Book Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion. His recent articles on religious liberty, religion, and law have appeared in the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal (2025), The Thomist (2025), Baylor Law Review (2024), The American Journal of Bioethics (2024),  Civil Rights Law Journal (2022),  BYU Law Review (2022), and Religions (2021).  In 2024 his academic work was recognized by the Heritage Foundation when he was one of 14 scholars awarded its Freedom and Opportunity Academic Prize.
