Philosophy makes sense because philosophy is all about making sense—of yourself, your life, and your world. I have always been attracted to William James’ definition of philosophy as “an unusually obstinate effort” to think deeply about the questions that matter the most. Contemporary philosophy has its own jargon and professional techniques, but at heart it remains a quest for wisdom: the kind of understanding that enables one to live a fully human life. Christians have special reasons to value philosophy, because Christianity is the key to gaining this kind of wisdom.
