In the discipline of Philosophy we reflect on and attempt to integrate all other disciplines, putting them in creative tension with each other in order to gain as complete an understanding of ourselves and our world as we can. We aim to think honestly, deeply, and charitably about anything of human concern, including perennial Big Questions about morality, knowledge, freedom, and God. And despite its reputation for irrelevance, philosophy is practical. Philosophy teaches the art and science of thinking well, and this is applicable to virtually any career path you might pursue, including law, business, medicine, education, and many others. So for its intrinsic value and its practical payoff, philosophy indeed makes sense.
